Nutrition for a Good Game

Recipe: Homemade Milk Chocolate with Cocoa Powder

It was one of those days when my 4 year old son and I were bored of playing all the usual games. So we had to think up of some new game. On that fateful day, the game of "Goodminton" was born.

What exactly is goodminton, you may ask? And how does one play it?
Well, all you need are
1) Two plastic bats (actually anything that functions as a bat will do)
2) a little-less-than-full blown up balloon and
3) an imaginary net (a real one will also do).
You play it very much like the well known game of badminton - have the 2 players stand on either courts and hit the balloon with the bat to each other :)

We thoroughly enjoyed playing this new game every day. This meant a lot more activity for him. So I wanted to make sure his energy levels are good and that he doesn't lose weight (considering the fact that he doesn't have enough of it as per the older and more experienced members of the family).

The next time I went to the super-market, I bought a fortified milk powder for children his age from a well-known company hoping that my son will attain all the 10 benefits stated behind the box in a matter of a few days of consuming the drink. But all my hopes vanished into thin air when my lil boy declared that he hated the taste of it and refused to go anywhere near it.

So now I'm left with this box of unused children's milk powder and an active kid engrossed in his game. I had to find a way to use up the milk powder and make sure my son is well nourished. (Ulterior motive: hide/disguise the nutritious milk powder in foods that my son likes) Also, I dont like wasting stuff.

After a few days of racking my brains to find a solution and a curious question from a friend asking me if I knew how to make chocolates from cocoa powder, I came up with an idea. I knew milk chocolates contained milk, cocoa, some fat (usually cocoa butter) and sugar. The result of my trials turned out to be an outstanding success.

You CAN really make stuff that tastes like chocolate from cocoa powder if you get the proportions right.

This will make a wonderful frosting for cakes as well. Optionally, you can make it into a pourable chocolate sauce consistency to be used with ice-creams/desserts by increasing the amount of milk used.

So here's my recipe for it. Its very simple and hardly needs any sort of skill.

HOMEMADE MILK CHOCOLATE WITH COCOA POWDER

Ingredients:

Nestle's NESLAC powder for children - 7 Tbsp
This can substituted with any other kind of milk powder as well. NESLAC is vanilla flavoured. If using other milk powders without any flavour, then add a tsp of vanilla essence as well.

Sugar - 5 tsp
The quantity of sugar will need to be adjusted as per personal tastes. We do not like coyingly sweet stuff. Also, NESLAC has added sugar in it.
If using normal milk powder, increase the amount of sugar to 8-10 tsp or as per taste.

Cocoa powder - 2 and 1/2 Tbsp (I used Cadbury's cocoa which is actually extremely bitter)

Melted butter - 5 Tbsp

Skimmed milk - 3 Tbsp

Method:

Put all the ingredients in a wet grinder and grind to a nice uniform, very thick and gooey paste. Milk needs to be added just to aid in the uniform grinding.

Butter the chocolate moulds and pour it into the moulds. If you do not have tiny chocolate moulds, you can also line a pan with buttered aluminum foil and use that. Else just spoon into tiny cupcake liners.

You can optionally add any topping. I have used chopped and roasted almonds.

Refrigerate over-night till firm. If you have used just one big pan to set the chocolate, then the chocolate has to be very firm before you try to cut it into squares.

This chocolate is truly creamy and gooey and yummy. It does melt fast too. For an interesting twist, serve the chocolates with some fresh plums or any other fresh fruit for a lovely dessert.

This is so good, I'm finding it difficult to refrain myself from gobbling it all up. I have to keep reminding myself that this is for my son and not me.

I'm sending this to Creative Concoctions 3 at Kopiaste.

That reminds me, about your earlier fix about a vegetarian Chatti Patthiri- I just made a whole wheat version, with a sausage filling and I know it is fine to vary it a lot. You can use mushrooms, soy nuggets, bellpeppers and caramelized onions instead of the chicken.
Also there are sweet versions of the Chatti Pathiri as well!
